Flexible Sections Course Format

Summary

In order to allow easier personalisation of courses in Moodle we have installed a new course format which allows the use of a banner image (an image that displays across the top of your course) and an automatic navigation drawer. The format also gives you the freedom to pick if you want to use the banner image or navigation bar.

Features of the Flexible Sections course format:

  • Automatic navigation bar
  • Automatic naming of first two sections (General and Assessment)
  • Sub sections
  • Show as link
  • Accessible navigation

Changing Course Formats

  1. Login to Moodle and open to your course.
  2. Select Settings – at the very top just below the name of your course.
  3. Expand the Course Format section and select the Flexible Sections format from the Format drop-down menu.
  4. Click Save and Display at the bottom of the page.

Adding a Banner Image

  1. Login to Moodle and open to your course.
  2. Select Settings – at the very top just below the name of your course.
  3. Upload an image to your Course Summary files area – this image is best sized 1200px wide by 800px high. This image can be cropped to the centre portion on some screens.
  4. Expand the Course Format section and make sure Flexible Sections format is selected for your Format – if it isn’t switch it.
  5. Click Save and Display at the bottom of the page.

Other settings

The other settings available to you for the Flexible Sections format include:

  • Navigation to link to single section? – this setting defines how the navigation buttons work. You can either link to a single section, meaning that only that section is displayed on the page. Or you can link to a particular section within a page containing all other sections.
