Summary

The calendar feature is highly used to provide students with their timetable events – students are able to subscribe to their calendar using their mobile devices to keep up-to-date.

Resources

Adding or Editing a single calendar event

  1. Login to Moodle and navigate to the course where you want the event to appear.
  2. Make sure editing is turned on (Turn editing on – toggle icon in the top right hand corner).
  3. Scroll down the grey blocks panel on the right-hand side of the screen until you come to Upcoming events – click New Event (if this block isn’t available select Upcoming events from the Add a block section at the very top).
  4. Select your event type (Course – for the whole course, Group – for a particular group of users or User – just for yourself). Make sure you give the event a title and description, you’ll also need to provide a date and have the option of providing a duration or making the event repeat.
  5. Click Save changes when you’re finished.

Bulk event creation

eLearning Facilitators at each campus are able to bulk load calendar events for student timetables. In order to utilise this service the details need to be provided in a specially formatted spreadsheet. The spreadsheet can be found above in the Resources section.

The first time you look need to build a spreadsheet for bulk event creation it can look a bit daunting – the eLearning Facilitators are available to guide you through the process.

How to subscribe to the calendar on a mobile device

iOS instructions

  1. Login to Moodle and open up a calendar page.
  2. Click Export Calendar.
  3. Tick All Events and Recent and next 60 days.
  4. Click Get calendar URL.
  5. Copy the URL (and email it to yourself if you did all the steps on your computer)
  6. On your iOS device take the copied URL (or take a copy from the email you sent) and open Settings > Passwords & Accounts.
  7. Click Add Account.
  8. Click Other.
  9. Click Add Subscribed Calendar.
  10. Paste in the copied URL and click Next.
  11. Rename the Description, you can leave the others with the default.
  12. Click Save.

Windows instructions

  1. Login to Moodle and open up a calendar page.
  2. Click Export Calendar.
  3. Tick All Events and Recent and next 60 days.
  4. Click Get calendar URL.
  5. Copy the URL.
  6. Open calendar.live.com in your web browser (use the Outlook account you use for your mobile device).
  7. Top menu > Import. Side menu>Subscribe.
  8. Paste the URL in and click Add Calendar.
  9. Go to the calendar application on your device and the newly created calendar should appear there – tick to enable the new calendar and you should be able to see your Moodle calendar on your phone.

Android instructions

  1. Login to Moodle and open up a calendar page.
  2. Click Export Calendar.
  3. Tick All Events and Recent and next 60 days.
  4. Click Get calendar URL.
  5. Copy the URL.
  6. Open calendar.google.com in your web browser (use the Google account you use for your mobile device).
  7. Click the + next to Other Calendars (lower left hand side of page) and select From URL.
  8. Paste the URL in and click Add Calendar.
  9. Go to the calendar application on your device and the newly created calendar should appear there – tick to enable the new calendar and you should be able to see your Moodle calendar on your phone.
  10. If you are having problems getting the Calendar on your Android phone (ie. works on google.com, but can’t see it on your phone). Try these steps
    1. In the Calendar app, go Settings.
    2. Under the default account (because that is what you did in Step 6), there will be a ‘Show More’ button. Click it.
    3. You will then see the URL, touching this will open a dialog with a sync button, Turn this on. You should only need to do this once.
    4. Also visiting, https://calendar.google.com/calendar/syncselect and ticking the appropriate calendar may help.
