Turnitin

Introduction

Turnitin Feedback Studio is an online marking and anti-plagiarism system, widely used at Otago. It enables lecturers to grade, annotate and comment on students’ assignments in an intuitive interface, as well as highlighting textual similarities between submissions and a vast array of content encompassing publicly accessible webpages, academic journals and past student works at Otago and other institutions.

Course Coordinators typically permit students to view Turnitin Similarity Reports for assignment drafts before submitting their final version for marking, to avoid inadvertent plagiarism and aid the acquisition of sound citation skills.

Turnitin has generally been regarded as the leader in the field of plagiarism detection and deterrence, and plays an important role in maintaining the University’s reputation for academic excellence.

Turnitin LTI Assignments Supersede Turnitin Direct

Since when Feedback Studio was first adopted by Otago in 2018 until the end of 2022, it’s functionality was made available in Blackboard by the means of ‘Turnitin Direct Assignments’. In 2023, Turnitin’s integration with our Blackboard environment has been updated to use the latest LTI (Learning Tools Interoperability) standard (LTI1.3). Turnitin LTI Assignments have superseded Turnitin Direct Assignments.

Staff can add new Turnitin LTI Assignments to their Blackboard papers from the ‘Build Content’ menu in content areas (not, please note, the ‘Assessments’ tab). This page explains the transition from Direct to LTI and its implications for the use of Turnitin Assignments this year.

The submission procedure for students has been improved with LTI and is largely self-explanatory, so students’ adaptation to Turnitin LTI Assignments is not expected to present difficulties. Nonetheless, instructors might wish to share this student help page link with their classes (for example, by simply including it in the instructions of the first LTI Assignment in your Blackboard paper).

Turnitin LTI Assignment Help for Teaching Staff

Turnitin’s Blackboard LTI 1.3 Instructor support pages are your primary source of information on Turnitin LTI Assignments and Feedback Studio.

The following supplementary Otago-centric pages created by ITS Digital Learning may assist both staff new to using Turnitin in our Blackboard environment and those conversant with Direct Assignments, adapting to LTI.
