When you add staff to a Blackboard paper, you have to choose which level of access to give them – most staff are given an “Instructor”, “TA”, “Builder” or “Grader” role, although some are given “Student” access to the paper, if all they need to do is to view content and participate in discussions. As a general rule, we suggest giving staff the LOWEST level access that they need.
What role do I need?
Access to Course Tools means a user can add and create content using these tools – including:
- Add items
Access to Course Links allows a user to create links to other areas within the course.
Access to the Grade Centre means a user is able to see all the grades from a paper, as well as being able to grade assignments and tests.
Access to Users/Groups means a user can create groups of students within the course.
Access to Customization means a user can change how the paper looks to other users – change the banner image or colours of the menu.
Access to Import/Export means a user can export sections of the course and import them into other courses where they have the same level of access.
Access to SafeAssignments means that a user can access “SafeAssignments” in the Course Tools section of the Control Panel , submit files, and view reports.
* A Course Builder can only create SafeAssignments and add them to a content area
* A Grader can only view SafeAssignment reports – they cannot create a SafeAssignment.
* A student can only access a SafeAssignment if an Instructor adds a “SafeAssignment” to a content area. A student cannot see the “Course Tools” section of the Control Panel at all.
