Adding a new Category

What is a category?

A category is a feature of MediaWiki, you can categorize pages and files which will create a list (index) of all pages and files in that category. This acts like a table of contents and can make it much easier to browse related content.

You can use the wiki’s URL for creating a new category. The URL to an article of the wiki is usually something like this:

  • http://wikiname.wikis.otago.ac.nz/Category: ARTICLE

If you replace ARTICLE with the name of the category you wish to create, you will be taken to a blank page which indicates that there are no articles or media currently in this category. Clicking the “edit” link at the top of the page will take you to the edit page for that category, where you can create the content by typing your text, and clicking submit. To add articles and media you will need to categorise your items. To do this you need to add the category to each of the articles/pages you wish to appear in this category. Go to the edit view of one of your articles and add the following line:

  • [[Category: ARTICLE]] (remember to substitute ARTICLE for your category name)

You can find more information about categories at the MediaWiki helpsite.
