{"id":57,"date":"2017-04-10T11:45:33","date_gmt":"2017-04-09T23:45:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/facmed.otago.ac.nz\/moodle\/?page_id=57"},"modified":"2023-01-10T11:03:42","modified_gmt":"2023-01-09T22:03:42","slug":"grading-an-assignment","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/help.otago.ac.nz\/moodle\/assessing-students\/assignments\/grading-an-assignment\/","title":{"rendered":"Grading an Assignment"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Summary<\/h2>\n<p>Grading assignments can be done in several ways &#8211; online or by downloading all the assignments and entering the grades later.<\/p>\n<h3>Resources<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.moodle.org\/401\/en\/Grading_quick_guide\">Grading Quick Guide<\/a> (Moodle.org)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How to grade an assignment<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Login to Moodle and navigate to the assignment you&#8217;re going to grade.<\/li>\n<li>Click on the assignment name &#8211; you should now see a grading summary.<\/li>\n<li>Click\u00a0<em>Grade<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>in the middle of the page.<\/li>\n<li>You&#8217;ll now see a page with the assignment submission on the left hand side, a panel across the top of the page with the student&#8217;s details and name of the assignment. Down the right hand side is the grading panel. If you unchecked <em>Annotate PDF<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>in the assignment settings, you will only see the grading panel.\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Markup toolbar<\/strong> &#8211; above the submission is a toolbar that allows you to add comments to the assignment file as well as draw on it or highlight sections.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Grade\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; depending on the settings of the assignment this is where you set the final grade for the assignment. This could be a numerical value, a simple pass\/fail or something else. After this is the marking workflow state &#8211; you&#8217;ll be told what setting you&#8217;re expected to use but generally an assignment could be grading and left as\u00a0<em>Marking Complete<\/em>\u00a0which means students don&#8217;t yet see the grade or\u00a0<em>Released<\/em> meaning students are sent their grade and feedback.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\"><b>Feedback comments<\/b> &#8211; use this section to provide feedback to the student about their assignment and your grade.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Feedback files\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; if this is turned on for this assignment you&#8217;re able to submit feedback as a file &#8211; just upload it in the window.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Attempt settings<\/strong> &#8211; here you can see how many attempts a student has made and if they&#8217;ve been allowed extra attempts.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Change user<\/strong> &#8211; use these arrows to switch between student submissions.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>When you&#8217;re finished grading click\u00a0<em>Save changes<\/em> at the bottom of the page.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>How to\u00a0download submissions<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Login to Moodle and navigate to the assignment you&#8217;re going to grade.<\/li>\n<li>Click on the assignment name &#8211; you should now see a grading summary.<\/li>\n<li>Click\u00a0<em>View all submissions<span style=\"color: #000000\"><b>.<\/b><\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">Select your group from the <I>Visible groups<\/i> drop down menu (or leave as <em>All participants<\/em>). Then tick the box below\u00a0<em>Select.\u00a0<\/em>Scroll to the bottom of the list of students and select\u00a0<em>Download selected submissions<\/em> from the\u00a0<em>With selected&#8230;<\/em> drop down.
