Without drastically changing everything you can make your course much more user friendly by using a few simple features. The University of Otago mandate a set of\u00a0<em>baseline elements<\/em> for every course in a Learning Management System (LMS).<\/p>\n<h3>Resources<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.otago.ac.nz\/administration\/policies\/provision-of-course-and-study-information-to-enrolled-students-policy\">Provision of Course and Study Information to Enrolled Students &#8211; LMS Baseline Elements<\/a> (University of Otago)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.moodle.org\/401\/en\/Using_Text_and_media_area\">Using Text and Media area<\/a> (Moodle.org)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Minimum Course Requirements<\/h2>\n<p>For each course in Moodle we recommend including a few basics (we refer to these as the\u00a0<em>Minimum Course Requirements<\/em>) &#8211; these requirements have been endorsed by MCC for 2019 and updated in 2025:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Overview<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Introduction and welcome<\/strong> &#8211; introduce the convenor and other key people, provide contact details.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Objectives and Outcomes<\/strong> &#8211; let the students know what it is they&#8217;re going to know by the end of your course.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Curriculum Map\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; let the students know which Presentations, Conditions, Activities and Outcomes are taught, assessed or have resources provided<\/li>\n<li><strong>Assessment<\/strong> &#8211; give a high level overview of how assessment works in your module including due dates and assessment types.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Learning Support information<\/strong> &#8211; details for reporting concerns, where to get help\/support.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Course documentation<\/strong> &#8211; handbook, long books, allocations etc.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Assessment<\/strong> &#8211; all assessment activities with clear due dates and instructions for Submissions in the\u00a0<em>Assessment<\/em> section\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Turnitin<\/strong> &#8211; recommend that all written assignments are checked by plagiarism detection service and that draft submission opportunities are available.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Copyright compliance<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>eReserve<\/strong> &#8211; links\u00a0to readings (as mandated by the Vice-Chancellor).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Communication<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Timetables<\/strong> &#8211; online timetables (see your eLearning Facilitator for guidance).<\/li>\n<li>Clearly stated methods of communication within module<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Results<\/strong> &#8211; all formative assessment results and marker comments available in Moodle.\n<ul>\n<li>Full digital record of summative assessment in Moodle<\/li>\n<li>Digital Summary of Achievement in Moodle utilising approved MBChB scales and calculations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Te Reo<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Integrated Hauora M\u0101ori glossary<\/li>\n<li>Bilingual section headers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Accessibility\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These basics should take up the first section or two of your course and be easy to find for students.
