{"id":205,"date":"2017-05-25T03:44:23","date_gmt":"2017-05-25T03:44:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/help.otago.ac.nz\/moodle\/?page_id=205"},"modified":"2023-05-16T08:54:03","modified_gmt":"2023-05-15T20:54:03","slug":"calendar","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/help.otago.ac.nz\/moodle\/communicating-with-students\/calendar\/","title":{"rendered":"Calendar"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Summary<\/h2>\n<p>The calendar feature is highly used to provide students with their timetable events &#8211; students are able to subscribe to their calendar using their mobile devices to keep up-to-date.<\/p>\n<h3>Resources<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.moodle.org\/401\/en\/Calendar\">Using Calendar<\/a> (Moodle.org)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Adding or Editing a single calendar event<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Login to Moodle and navigate to the course where you want the event to appear.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure editing is turned on <em>(<\/em><em>Turn editing<\/em>\u00a0<em>on<\/em> &#8211; toggle icon in the top right hand corner).<\/li>\n<li>Scroll down the grey blocks panel on the right-hand side of the screen until you come to\u00a0<em>Upcoming events<\/em> &#8211; click\u00a0<em>New Event<\/em> (if this block isn&#8217;t available select <em>Upcoming events<\/em>\u00a0from the\u00a0<em>Add a block<\/em> section at the very top).<\/li>\n<li>Select your event type (<em>Course<\/em> &#8211; for the whole course, <em>Group<\/em> &#8211; for a particular group of users\u00a0or<em> User<\/em> &#8211; just for yourself). Make sure you give the event a title and description, you&#8217;ll also need to provide a date and have the option of providing a duration or making the event repeat.<\/li>\n<li>Click\u00a0<em>Save changes\u00a0<\/em>when you&#8217;re finished.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 id=\"bulkEvent\">Bulk event creation<\/h2>\n<p>eLearning Facilitators at each campus are able to bulk load calendar events for student timetables. In order to utilise this service the details need to be provided in a specially formatted spreadsheet. The spreadsheet can be found above in the Resources section.<\/p>\n<p>The first time you look need to build a spreadsheet for bulk event creation it can look a bit daunting &#8211; the eLearning Facilitators are available to guide you through the process.<\/p>\n<p>A more in-depth set of instructions for this can be found on the\u00a0<em>Bulk event creation page (See below).<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"subscribe\">How to subscribe to the calendar on a mobile device<\/h2>\n<p><strong>iOS instructions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Login to Moodle and open up a calendar page.<\/li>\n<li>Click\u00a0<em>Export Calendar<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Tick\u00a0<em>All Events<\/em> and\u00a0<em>Recent and next 60 days<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Click\u00a0<em>Get calendar URL.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Copy the URL (and email it to yourself if you did all the steps on your computer)<\/li>\n<li>On your iOS device take the copied URL (or take a copy from the email you sent) and open\u00a0<em>Settings &gt; Passwords &amp; Accounts.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Click\u00a0<em>Add Account<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Click\u00a0<em>Other.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Click\u00a0<em>Add Subscribed Calendar<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Paste in the copied URL and click\u00a0<em>Next<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Rename the Description, you can leave the others with the default.<\/li>\n<li>Click\u00a0<em>Save<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Windows instructions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Login to Moodle and open up a calendar page.<\/li>\n<li>Click\u00a0<em>Export Calendar<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Tick\u00a0<em>All Events<\/em> and\u00a0<em>Recent and next 60 days<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Click\u00a0<em>Get calendar URL.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Copy the URL.<\/li>\n<li>Open\u00a0<em>calendar.live.com<\/em> in your web browser (use the Outlook account you use for your mobile device).<\/li>\n<li>Top menu &gt; Import. Side menu&gt;Subscribe.<\/li>\n<li>Paste the URL in and click\u00a0<em>Add Calendar<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Go to the calendar application on your device and the newly created calendar should appear there &#8211; tick to enable the new calendar and you should be able to see your Moodle calendar on your phone.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Android instructions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Login to Moodle and open up a calendar page.<\/li>\n<li>Click\u00a0<em>Export Calendar<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Tick\u00a0<em>All Events<\/em> and\u00a0<em>Recent and next 60 days<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Click\u00a0<em>Get calendar URL.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Copy the URL.<\/li>\n<li>Open\u00a0<em>calendar.google.com<\/em> in your web browser (use the Google account you use for your mobile device).<\/li>\n<li>Click the + next to\u00a0<em>Other Calendars<\/em> (lower left hand side of page) and select\u00a0<em>From URL<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Paste the URL in and click\u00a0<em>Add Calendar<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Go to the calendar application on your device and the newly created calendar should appear there &#8211; tick to enable the new calendar and you should be able to see your Moodle calendar on your phone.<\/li>\n<li>If you are having problems getting the Calendar on your Android phone (ie. works on google.com, but can&#8217;t see it on your phone). Try these steps\n<ol>\n<li>In the Calendar app, go Settings.<\/li>\n<li>Under the default account (because that is what you did in Step 6), there will be a &#8216;Show More&#8217; button. Click it.<\/li>\n<li>You will then see the URL, touching this will open a dialog with a sync button, Turn this on.
